ADSL broadband provides you with instant 24 hour internet
access. This means there is no dial in cost with your phone
company, and no more busy dial tones when your internet company
is too busy. As long as your computer is on you are connected
to the internet.
ADSL
can be between 5 and 10 times faster than your dialup account.
You
can talk on your phone while you are using the internet, no
longer do you have to miss phone calls because you are on
the internet.
WHAT DOES ADSL STAND
FOR
ADSL stands for Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line.
HOW DOES IT
WORK
ADSL is a type of broadband
service that connects to your existing phone line. This service
uses 2 different frequencies at the same time which allows
you to use voice communication (your phone) and high speed
data communication (your internet) at the same time.
For
ADSL to work on your phone it needs to be activated on your
phone line at your local interchange. Telstra owns all the
infrastructure for ADSL services in Australia and they need
to complete this work. When you apply for an ADSL service
with your internet provider, they forward a request to Telstra
to do this for you. This process can take between 5 and sometimes
25 days to occur.
In
most cases you need a Telstra phone connection to get ADSL.
Remember
ADSL connects to your phone line. If you move house you cannot
move your ADSL connection without requesting the change with
your internet provider. You also cannot access your ADSL from
another phone line, some internet providers supply a backup
dialup account for users who need to access the internet away
from their ADSL connection.
UNDERSTANDING
ADSL SPEEDS
ADSL speeds are normally asymmetric.
This means that the speed at which you download is different
to the speed at which you upload. For example a 256/64k line
means you can download to a maximum speed of 256kbs and upload
at a maximum speed of 64kbs. When you surf the internet you
download more than you upload, when you send emails, chat
or play games you upload more than you download.
